At Etch we rationalise our ability to take risks and explore the unknown by a term called ‘Radical Management’. Leeds University Emeritus Professor in Human Decision Making, John Maule states that “Feelings of worry (stress) tend to be very distracting, reducing our ability to think effectively about the decision in hand … thinking becomes much narrower in focus, leading decision makers to neglect important information necessary for developing creative solutions”. In an effort to prevent stress, promoting mindfulness has become a core function of radical management at Etch.
A few weeks ago we attended a Mindfulness at Work Masterclass with Shamash Alidina. Alidina is the international bestselling author of the Mindfulness For Dummies series, Mindfulness for Dummies at Work, and The Mindful Way through Stress. He names stress as the reason behind 40% of work-related illnesses, highlighting the importance of companies to promote and support mindfulness.

The award recognises a list of 50 powerful executives in the UK, who are all managing successful careers working part time or flexibly. Shelly, who works 4 days a week, states that her decision to create a flexible working environment at Etch “isn’t about appearing progressive or winning workplace awards, it’s about taking a genuine look at what empowers people to be happier and more productive at work, allowing them to maintain a successful career and life outside work”.
